Do you already know what Chinese New Year is? As we know, in Indonesia the Chinese people will celebrate Chinese New Year every year on a different date (usually at the beginning of the year). Chinese New Year is a tradition passed down from generation to generation by the Chinese community, every year they will do an "open house" activity so that guests come from all walks of life (friends, family, co-workers, etc.) to their house. The tradition of giving angpao is also common, usually giving priority to children, parents, and people who are not married or working. Uniquely, only people who are married and earn their income are allowed to give angpao. If an unmarried person gives angpao, the myth is that they will not get a mate.
Chinese New Year is the most important celebration for the Chinese people. Chinese New Year 2023 will fall on Sunday, January 22nd, 2023, starting a year of the Rabbit. As a public holiday in Indonesia, the Chinese people will get 3-6 days off from work. In China, regional customs and traditions related to Chinese New Year celebrations vary widely. But in general, some traditions are still followed by Chinese people, such as having a reunion dinner together and light fireworks.
After 3 years, we can finally celebrate Chinese New Year at school which is at SMA Maitreyawira Batam. SMA Maitreyawira Batam held a Chinese New Year celebration on 3rd February 2023 at the SMA Maitreyawira Hall. At the time, Maitreyawira High School Student Council held a Chinese New Year celebration in collaboration with Maitreyawira Vocational School in carrying out Chinese New Year celebrations to strengthen relations with each other. There are various types of activities held; such as angpao search competitions, fashion show competitions, class decorating, visiting other classes, and many more.
After a long time, the school did not hold Chinese New Year celebrations due to the covid-19 disaster, 2023 is the first celebration of Maitreyawira High School after 3 years. "Last year's Chinese New Year was very fun and exciting because we were able to celebrate Chinese New Year with teachers and friends from the Maitreyawira Vocational School and High School There were also many competitions so that students could contribute their talents such as dancing, singing, fashion shows, etc," said Alexander Fortune (XI Multimedia).
We have asked the vice chairman of the Maitreyawira Batam High School Student Council, namely Charles Dano Huang (X MIPA 2), in Charles' opinion, this year's high school/vocational high school Chinese New Year event was very lively and his friends were also interactive, especially with the Chinese New Year celebrations from MAITREYAWIRA High School joining. and SMK MAITREYAWIRA so that this year's Chinese New Year event can be the beginning of unity and cohesiveness among Maitreyawira's fellow students. Then with the various competitions that were held, it was felt that there was a sense of togetherness that was created through this Chinese New Year event. With the Chinese New Year celebrations being combined this year, Charles hopes that high school and vocational high school students can mingle with each other without discriminating against one another. Charles's goal this year is to remain in the student council organization and be able to serve as the student council president for Maitreyawira High School.
According to Eustacia, a Maitreyawira High School student, this year's Chinese New Year celebration is quite interesting especially since this is the first Chinese New Year celebration at Maitreyawira High School after going through the Covid-19 period. According to Eustacia, the celebration was fun because there was a singing program and a mascot.
The Chinese New Year tradition is a happy celebration for welcoming the Chinese New Year, but several myths are still believed by the Chinese ethnic community. We have interviewed several Maitreyawira High School students about what they know about the Chinese New Year myth. One of the myths is "you can't wear black clothes during Chinese New Year".
"Black is not suitable as a Chinese New Year nuance, and Chinese New Year itself is synonymous with gathering together and being festive," Alexander answered briefly and clearly when we asked. According to Eustacia, an MW high school student who is also a Chinese member, she believes that wearing black clothes will bring bad luck for that year. "Using black clothes during Chinese New Year will bring bad luck throughout the year, even though he doesn't believe in myths, he still has to respect and value the beliefs of his ancestors," Charles answered about the myth of not being able to wear black clothes during Chinese New Year.
It's true, according to the Chinese, black is the color that signifies "death”, so it's not good to wear black when celebrating the happy Chinese New Year. Usually, during Chinese New Year, most Chinese people wear brightly colored clothes as a sign of happiness, cheerfulness, positivity, and brings good luck. The clothing colors that the Chinese tend to wear during Chinese New Year are red (mostly), bright pink, blue, yellow, orange, etc.
Chinese New Year is an important celebration for the Chinese community. It is hoped that in the future the Indonesian people can celebrate Chinese New Year together without differentiating ethnic groups and can respect each other.
